The figures in this painting are from a photo taken at a 1960s party inside the original Chicago, Illinois Playboy mansion. While continuing her focus on the culture surrounding Playboy during its heyday, Madison used this piece as an opportunity to challenge her skill set. Specifically, she set out to do a study comprised of bold colors and various visual textures.
"I wanted to capture the realistic aspects of the two figures while using the ombre velvet curtain to create an evocative, twilight atmosphere," says Madison. "Additionally, and apropos to the context of the reference photo, I’ve been contemplating the role of substance use within midcentury American culture. I believe that its role during that time period has affected both the contemporary view and social acceptability of those substances in our world today."
