"Many artists of the modern era have made an American flag painting," says Madison, "and being that my art is focused primarily on American culture, I wanted to try my hand at it. The stars have been transmuted into space, symbology I often use to represent consciousness. The flat plane of the “stripe” section is precariously placed next to the drastic drop off of vast space in the corner, creating a portal of sorts.

"I made this painting during my final year of college when I was thinking a lot about how patriotism finds its way into the most mundane consumer products, like the red and white toothpaste I rendered to “stripe” the flag."
