The reference photo used for this painting was taken inside of the Whisky a Go Go in the 1960s. Madison chose a dark, haunting color palette which creates an almost hellish landscape to signify the dark underbelly of California during that time. Under all of the music, partying, and cultural expansion there was a fair amount of murder, violence, overindulgence, and death. Madison sites The Doors as an influence while making this painting, as their music corresponds to this psychedelic yet brooding moment within American history.
